Buses in Sweden

Buses in Sweden

Public transport in Sweden is generally excellent. Each county (län) runs its own network of buses (and sometimes trains). There are also national long-distance express services.
No matter what you choose, you can use the excellent ResRobot planning tool; it searches most routes in Sweden - regional and national buses, trains, flights, etc. Use the tool to the right on this page or visit the ResRobot site. However, ResRobot won't show you prices. But you can also search for trips and buy tickets through the main train operator SJ; their website sells train tickets but also tickets for buses.

Regional bus networks

Each county in Sweden provides at least bus services, and often trains or trams. Tickets can be used on either and you can typically transfer freely from one to the other within a given amount of time. If you intend to stay in a particular region for a while, look up ticket options; you can usually buy weekly or monthly passes or get discounts.
These are the regional companies as of today: Blekingetrafiken, Dalatrafik, Hallandstrafiken, Jönköpings länstrafik, Kalmar Läns Trafik, Kollektivtrafiken (Gotland), Länstrafiken i Jämtlands län, Länstrafiken i Västerbotten, Länstrafiken Kronoberg, Länstrafiken Norrbotten, Länstrafiken Sörmland, Länstrafiken Örebro, Skånetrafiken, Storstockholms Lokaltrafik, Upplands lokaltrafik, Värmlandstrafik, Västernorrlands läns trafik, Västmanlands lokaltrafik, Västtrafik (Västra Götaland), Waxholmsbolaget (boat services in Stockholm) X-Trafik (Gävleborg), Östgötatrafiken.

Stockholm

Storstockholms Lokaltrafik, SL, runs the public transport in Stockholm and Stockholm County - buses, subway and commuter trains.

Gothenburg (Göteborg)

Västtrafik runs the public transport in the Gothenburg area - buses, trams, trains, ferries.

Malmö

Skånetrafiken operates buses and trains in Malmö as well as the rest of Skåne.

National long-distance services

Going by bus is often cheaper than going by train in Sweden.

Swebus

Swebus is the largest express bus operator with about 300 destinations:
  • Buying tickets online is recommended - it's the cheapest way. You can also buy them by phone, at a number of Swebus agents, and, notably, at any Pressbyrån or 7-Eleven store. Read more about the options. You can no longer buy a ticket onboard the bus!
  • For the best fares, get your tickets well in advance and try to travel on less busy days (avoid Friday and Sunday).
  • Discounts for children, youth (16-25), pensioners and students (need CSN, Mecenat, Membit, Studentkortet, ISIC or IYTC card)
Good to know:
  • All Swebus Express buses have free wifi, air condition, toilet
  • Some buses have power sockets

Other operators

Svenska Buss has several bus lines: Stockholm-Sundsvall-Ånge/Härnösand, Stockholm-Vetlanda-Växjö, Stockholm-Vimmerby-Kalmar-Nybro/Åseda/Oskarshamn, Stockholm-Karlskrona-Malmö, Göteborg-Jönköping-Stockholm.
Ybuss runs long-distance buses to/from northern Sweden (e.g., Sundsvall, Östersund, Umeå, Luleå, Sollefteå). (Note that Ybuss cooperates with Swebus for booking, so that through Ybuss you can book a journey involving a Swebus route and vice versa.)

Göteborg City Airport (IATA: GSEICAO: ESGP), formerly (and still informally) known as Säve Flygplats, is Gothenburg's second international airport, located 5 NM (9.3 km; 5.8 mi) north-west[1] from the centre of Gothenburg on the island of Hisingen, Bohuslän, Sweden. It is located within the borders of Gothenburg Municipality, hence its name. Prior to the arrival of Ryanair in 2001, the airport had 9,000 passengers per year. 844,000 passengers flew from City Airport in 2008. In addition to commercial airlines, the airport is also operated by a number of rescue services, including the Swedish Coast Guard.
Although it's primarily a low-cost airline airport, it is actually located closer to Gothenburg city centre than the main (Göteborg Landvetter Airport with 4.36 million passengers in 2007), even if the driving time is around the same. It is one of the few city airports Ryanair operates to. Göteborg City Airport can handle planes up to the size of a Boeing 767, an Airbus A320 or similar jets. The airport also accommodates General Aviation activities, including 2 flying clubs, Aeroklubben i Göteborg and Chalmers flygklubb.

History

In 1940, a military airbase called F9 Säve was built here. The airbase was closed down in 1969. In 1977, the old airport Torslanda (about 10 km south of Säve) was closed down, and scheduled flights moved to Landvetter, and general aviation was moved to Säve. In 1984, the runway was improved and extended to allow larger business jets etc. In 2001, the airport was renamed City Airport, and Ryanair started operating scheduled flights to London. In 2004, the Swedish Armed Forces entirely left the airport, when a helicopter squadron of the Swedish Marines was shut down. Although it still lodges a museum called Aeroseum, keeping various fighter jets and showing military aircraft history.

Ground transportation

There are bus services that match every Ryanair and Wizz Air departure and arrival, terminating at the Nils Ericson Terminal in central Gothenburg (they take about 30 minutes and cost 60 SEK).[4] Regular Gothenburg passes (Västtrafik) are not valid on these buses.[5]
It is possible to use normal suburban buses (Västtrafik), which stop at the main road 600 m from the terminal (57°46.931′N 11°51.726′E). The bus stop is named "Säve Flygplats" and is served by bus number 36 starting from Hjalmar Brantingsplatsen once per hour. However tickets must be pre-bought, since they are not sold on board, nor at the airport. Västtrafik card and passes are valid for this bus.[6] With a mobile phone having a Swedish operator, a ticket can be bought through a text message, but not if using a foreign mobile phone.[7]
Taxis and rental cars are available at the airport. To find the airport driving yourself, use the exit 82 on the E6 north of the city. Long and short term parking are
